Energy Choices: Oil Tank/Insurance
Should I test my tank?
Yes
- If you want tank insurance
- If you are selling the house - the buyer will insist upon it
- If you are a buyer
No
- If the tank is to be replaced and removed
- If you think it will tell you how long the tank will last
- If you have an above ground tank
Why should I replace my tank?
- To avoid the hazard and expense of an oil spill
- The tank, oil lines, fill and vent pipes may be rotted
- Dirty tank-sediment buildup over 20/30 years old
- To avoid untimely interruption of heating service
- You can't predict the life of a tank-conditions vary
- Laws and Codes change (may have to replace)
What happens if oil contamination is discovered?
Should contamination be detected, the Department of Environmental Conservation (D.E.C.) will be notified, as required. The cost of the remediation will be a separate cost unrelated to Robison.
Removal vs. Abandonment
Robison will assist you in all facets of your project. Our team of experts will help advise you on what is the best course of action for your particular location.
Removal of the oil tank from the property is always the preferred choice. Tank removal includes backfill material and use of a backhoe. Disturbed area will be returned to rough grade. All documentation will be provided. Permits when required will be purchased and included in the proposal.
Abandonment is not recommended. This involves exposing the top of the oil tank. The technicians will cut and clean (squeegee) the tank. Sediment will be drummed for disposal. The tank is then filled will either sand, concrete or foam (depending upon local code requirements). If contamination is discovered, remediation must occur.
Replacement Tanks
We will help you consider your options by planning your inventory needs and location of your tank. Robison will help determine if your best choice is above ground or below ground for your new oil tank.
How do I sign for Oil Tanks insurance?
Ask your Robison representative about the "Clear Program". The "Clear Program" is coverage for your oil tank that protects you against the problems associated with a release. Completion of an application and a recent tank test is required. Ask your representative for more information.
Tank location considerations
Above-Ground
- Must fit through all turns and doors to basement area
- Must be 6'-8' away from boiler/furnace
- Must run oil lines that will not be stepped on
- Fill and vent pipes must be installed
- Other code requirements may apply Under-Ground
- Must be in location where delivery can be made easily
- Backhoe must have clearance on property for installation
What about the existing oil in the tank?
The price of the tank installation will include the pump-over of usable oil to the new tank. The technician will determine the amount of useable oil at the time of the installation. Excess oil and/or sludge will require the use of a vacuum truck for proper disposal.
